The Mynabirds

Als Mitglied von The Postal Service kam Laura Burhenn (aka The Mynabirds) im Jahr 2013 schon mal ordentlich rum - danach war aber erst mal Pause angesagt. Sie reiste zweimal durch die USA, tourte solo in Südafrika, trat live in London auf und blieb dann noch eine ganze Weile in Europa, mit den Worten William Faulkners im Hinterkopf: "You cannot swim for new horizons until you have courage to lose sight of the shore." - schließlich landete sie aber wieder in L.A., immerhin mit ausreichend vielen Songs für ein vollständiges neues Album.

 

"Lovers Know", ihre dritte Solo-Platte (VÖ Anfang August bei Saddle Creek) wurde aufgenommen und produziert im Zeitraum ungefähr eines Jahres - in Los Angeles, Joshua Tree, Nashville und Auckland (Neuseeland). Und es ist gewissermaßen Neuland für Burhenn: sie formte etwas neues und eigenes aus 80er-, 90er- und futuristischen Soundscapes, nehm bezug auf Kate Bush, Sinead O'Connor, The Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine .. aber auch 90er-Hip-Hop und R&B. Das Album mag vollgepackt sein mit neuen Sounds (Synths, Gitarren & Drums), aber ihre düstere, geheimnisvolle und unverkennbare Stimme steht über allem anderen. Textlich ist "Lovers Know" ihr persönlichstes und ehrlichstes Album bislang, gleichzeitig aber auch ihr zugänglichstes.

 

"There's something about wandering the world over", gibt Laura zu Protokoll, "that makes you realize how similar we all are – everyone searching for something, so often the same thing: love. It may sound trite, but it's true. Love – or the lack of it – is the thing we all have in common. It can destroy us. It can break us open and let the light in. And it's also the thing that can make us sing."
